DALI & DALI-2 Lighting Control

The open digital protocol behind most modern commercial lighting — designed, addressed, commissioned and diagnosed properly.

Start Project

Addressed, Not Just Dimmed

DALI — Digital Addressable Lighting Interface — is an open protocol defined by IEC 62386. Instead of sending a voltage down a dimming pair and hoping, it sends digital commands to individually addressed drivers, and those drivers answer back.

That two-way conversation is the whole point. A DALI line tells you which driver has failed, how much energy each luminaire drew, and whether an emergency fitting passed its discharge test — over the same two-core pair that carries the control.

Looking for this by building type rather than by protocol? See commercial lighting control for offices, retail, aged care and education.

Inherited a System?

Undocumented DALI Is Our Bread and Butter

A large share of the DALI work we do is on buildings a few years old where the original commissioning was rushed, undocumented, or left in broadcast mode — every fitting on a line doing the same thing, which discards the reason DALI was specified in the first place. We audit what is physically installed, re-address properly, and hand back documentation.

Digital, Not Analogue

DALI sends addressed digital commands rather than a voltage level. Every fitting knows its own identity, so control is per-luminaire rather than per-circuit.

Two-Way Communication

Drivers report back — lamp failure, driver fault, energy use, burn hours. The system tells you what has failed before an occupant does.

Polarity-Free Wiring

The two-core control pair is polarity insensitive and can share a multicore with mains. Topology is free-form: star, daisy chain or a mix.

DALI-2 Device Certification

DALI-2 (IEC 62386) extends certification from drivers to sensors, wall plates and application controllers — which is what makes multi-vendor systems genuinely interoperable.

D4i Luminaire Data

D4i adds standardised energy and diagnostic reporting inside the luminaire — the foundation for accurate lighting energy data in an NABERS or ESG report.

Gateways to Everything

DALI rarely lives alone. We gateway it to KNX, BACnet, Modbus and Dynalite so lighting reports into the wider building system.

Versatile Applications

Where We Deploy

Topology, Addressing & Device Types

The technical shape of a DALI system, and the decisions that determine whether it can be extended later.

64 Addresses Per Line

One DALI line carries up to 64 short addresses, 16 groups and 16 scenes. Larger buildings use multiple lines behind an application controller.

Device Types (DT)

DT6 for LED drivers, DT8 for colour and tunable white, DT1 for emergency. Getting the device type right at specification avoids discovering a driver cannot do what the design assumed.

Bus Power Budget

Each device draws from a limited bus supply. We calculate the load at design rather than finding the ceiling during commissioning.

Broadcast vs Addressed

Cheap installs run broadcast — every fitting doing the same thing, which throws away the entire point. We commission addressed.

Frequently Asked

Common Questions

How We Deliver

From initial design through to final commissioning — here's how a typical project runs.

1

Design & Device Schedule

Line planning, bus load calculation, device type selection and sensor placement.

2

Addressing

Every driver and control device addressed and recorded against the luminaire schedule.

3

Tune On Site

Scenes, photocell setpoints and occupancy timing adjusted in the finished space.

4

Verify & Document

Functional testing, emergency verification, and as-commissioned records handed over.
